Hiring (and Keeping) Employees at Your Burger Joint

Your burger joint is only as good as those who keep in running, meaning your employees. You might have great food, but that food has to be prepared by someone and served by someone as well. There is so much more to a burger joint than you and whoever sits behind a desk in the back. You will need to hire managers, cooks, servers, dishwashers, bussers, and hosts. But once you hire these employees, you also need to treat them well to ensure you keep them.

What to look for in employees


  • Most important employee
  • Handles many duties
  • Should have already managed a restaurant in the area
  • Able to open and close the restaurant
  • Can purchase food and beverages
  • Work the cash register
  • Track inventory
  • Manage and train new staff
  • Work with suppliers
  • Good attitude
  • Leadership skills


  • Full staff of chefs including head chef, sous chef, and line cooks
  • Know how to prepare dishes
  • Work as a team
  • Has experience in a kitchen or running a kitchen
  • Willing to work extra hours
  • Sanitary


  • Do not necessarily need to be experienced
  • Needs to learn how to handle different types of of cutlery and dishes
  • Hire at least one for the lunch shift and one for dinner shift
  • Expect to pay minimum wage

Serving staff and bussers

  • Front line of your operation
  • Must work well under pressure
  • Have a good impression on customers
  • Handle demands of customers
  • Work for long hours
  • Experience is necessary for servers, but bussers can be trained on the job
  • Bussers and servers should be able to work together as a team


  • Not always necessary, depends on size of operation
  • May need to act as cashier
  • Be people oriented and welcoming
  • Have a good attitude

Treat your employees well

Pay fairly

Be sure to pay your employees fairly, and give them a raise when they deserve it. It is typically to give a raise of $.50-$1 per hour each year that they work for you.

Allow time off

Everyone deserves time off. Try to be understanding when your employees ask for time off and accommodate them as much as possible within reason.

Listen to their concerns

Make sure you offer time to receive feedback from your employees. You can do this in a way that is anonymous so they feel listened to and comfortable to voice their concerns.

Feed them!

Rather than require your employees to purchase a meal during their shift, give your employees a free meal during the workday. This can go a long way in terms of team morale.

Provide adequate breaks

There is nothing worse than tired and overworked employees. Be sure to have your employees take at least a 30 minute break every six hours of work.
